The pounding noise came from a nearby saguaro.
I watched the 'see through' hole in the trunk,
but no sounds came from that.
A walk around the trunk showed me the noisemaker.
A gila woodpecker.
Bang bang bang, he drilled on.
All sound, all day.

Making a new "residence?"
The only thing I know about cacti is the ones that grow in a little dish on the table! Its fun to see a little bird take on a big Saguaro, though.

They are quite active right now.....especially on a hummingbird feeder that I have hanging up....Mr. Gila loves to spill everything on the ground:)

I just read that the Mojave Green's camouflage enables him to climb atop Verde trees and Saguaro cactus in order to prey on birds. Woody better watch out

I love woodpeckers, find it hard to believe how they make a living. I didn't know the cacti were hard enough to highlight his pounding.
Oh, Banjomyn, saguaros are dense. Dense dense dense. My folks had one in their front yard for years. One year, it fell over... KAPUT... out into the street. Sounded like an earthquake. Shook the adjoining houses. Block traffic until someone showed up with a chain saw to cut it apart.
PA, didn't know Mohave Greens' were 'climbers' (do they slither up the cactus?).
Saguaros here sustain amazing damage and keep on living. Holes, nests, drilled holes... nothing bothers it!
I would love to get a view of this woodpecker.
