It's a cute one! Nice photos Brenda! Hey guess what? I just this second remembered that I bought the book (Townie) you told me about a long time ago, but still haven't read it.
Like Jo, I didn't know the gila. S/he looks pretty similar to a female red-bellied over here in the tame East. I love woodpeckers, but wonder what it'd be like living next to one.
My daughter Lara, the book reviewer, has a new site in case you haven't heard. I don't think she would mind if I appoint myself as temporary PR agent! http://onelitchick.com/

That sounds pretty good to me! :-)
Such a lovely and incredible pic!
I am trying to find this bird in my Book, but realized he must be a West of the Rockies dweller, not East!
Wonderful picture!

Great shots of this little pecker!

Jo - should I send you a western birding book? We could swap.
Deserts&Beyond - nice to see sun in your vicinity today. Guess it is on its way to us.
Pat, I had forgotten about the book!
Kathy, yep, know Laura's website. Read on!
Banjo, nothing worse than a woodpecker drilling a light pole (not a wooden one). We get those, and they are noisy!
Thanks all.
