Green herons - one of the smallest herons.
Green herons are smart. They eat fish - and these herons first drop a twig into the water. When a fish swims up to the twig, the green heron extends its long neck and GRABS the unsuspecting fish. Green herons aren't as stately as their relatives, the blue herons - but greens sure are smart!

Peterson's Bird Book says these Green Herons only come half way in MN. Looks like they stop mid-state, take a left for the Dakotas. They are a beautiful bird, though, and wish they would stop by our lakes, ponds and swamps. Maybe they do in the summertime!

The animal kingdom never ceases to amaze me. They are all given a whole lot of smarts in ways we would never think of.
I've taken a few photos of these my self. They are amazingly fast and can pluck an Insect out of the air with lightening speed. Great photos.
