Comet Watching

Last evening was an excellent time to see the PanSTARR comet.
E and a friend went out FAR west of the city lights
and awaited dusk.
By looking south of the moon (not below the moon, but south by a map), they could see the comet.
An occasional jet crossed the sky... but the comet had center stage.

A keen eye, patient observation, is the key to comet watching.

"Pay attention. It's all about paying attention. attention is vitality. It connects you with others. It makes you eager. Stay eager.” ― Susan Sontag

It should be seen from here too... but the sky is so full of snow...

To answer your question, it's pretty easy, it was made through broken glass. For the first series it was with a clear glass and for the second one with a glass "biot style." Other than that nothing. It was fun.

That last photo was just a dazzler!

Did they reluctantly give you this to post?

Therese, thanks for the insight to the photos on your blog! Something I will try.
Jo, they were happy to give me the photos, but I was reluctant to post them!
We caught the comet again last night, this time while viewing from our backyard. Next week will be have another prime viewing time.
Kathy, thank you!!! I will try.

Well rats! I forgot all about that comet. Is it gone now?

Each pic gets better! That last one with the moon and cactus would be excellent even without the comet.

The biz of paying attention, with or without Sontag, is often a subject at writers conferences--along with "witnessing" and "the devil's in the details."

I ran into a chap one evening, looking through his binoculars. Had no idea this was going on (where have I been?). Anyway, he gave me the binocs, told me where to train them, and I saw it!
