Even Gambel's quail awake early to watch the morning dawn. The silence is broken only by the birds' chatter. Are they singing the praise of the new day? Calling to each other with a cheerful "good day, friend."?
Or do they just talk to themselves as they think of each task they attempt, each movement they observe, each thought they think?

I can't think of what they might be doing, except letting each other know they have got through the night OK.
I love their perky little head dress, don't you?
Cheers,
Jo, Stella and Zkhat
I was seeing these quail all the time on my recent trip to AZ. They would be calling the minute I stepped outside. I loved seeing them scurry - usually in pairs.
Why not all those options?
Did you happen to see CBS's Sunday Morning show today? They did a nice piece on Magee Marsh's birds and birders, a half-hour east of Toledo, Ohio. (We just returned from there a week ago--chestnut-sided warble--holy cow! [holy bird!]).
Banjo - cool! Holy bird is right! Can't wait to see your photos on your blog - I know you will work them in. Thanks!
Thanks, B, but I got NO decent bird shots this time. Sorry. Am I banished?
Banjo, you aren't banished. Your photos and your blog are TOO good to let you disappear. But are you planning another road trip to Magee Marsh? Just for photos??
Love these guys! I have no idea what they talk about. I just love to hear them do it!
