I'm listening

I came across a new (to me) Billy Collins poem. The poem "Le Chien" (from the book Ballistics: Poems) is about his bored, tireless conversations (in english) with a (french) dog he found in Paris.

"No wonder she kept cocking her head
as I went on about 'summer movies'..."

I'm listening

"She showed such patience for a dog
without breeding while I went on..."
I'm still listening...

"I was standing and she was sitting
on a dim street..."

"...wasting my time and hers
trying to explain 'corn dogs,' 'white walls,' and 'the March of Dimes.'"

"...wishing I only had my camera
so I could carry a picture of her home with me."

"...I kept thinking how I would have loved
to hang her picture over the mantel
where my maternal grandmother now looks down..."

"Then, before dinner each evening
I could stand before the image of that very dog..."
"...submitting all my troubles and petitions
to the court of her dark-brown, adoring eyes."

What an awesome poem.. We are sure that the pup knew what was being said just by the body language. Heck that is how the deaf Red's do it.. It isn't all in the words....

How cute! I never thought about it my poor pups must get tired of the same old conversations we have! So glad they are such great listeners.

Thanks very much for the intro to Billy Collins. The first I read was Dharma on this blog and LeChien is wonderful too. I think I am going to start a small collection of his books . . .I didn't know he was the US Poet Laureate for a few years but I love his style.

Your photos of your lovely pup just moved me too. That whole coloration is gorgeous and looks like every dog. Dennis the Vizsla's sister dog Trixie is another beauty like this.

Cheers and hugs,
Jo

Dogs are the best friends. They understand every word we say - unlike most people. Scratch the good puppy's ear for me!

Another good word and picture mix. Nice of the five pooches too--almost like synchronized swimming. Well, with a lot of imagination.

Perfect illustrations for a lovely poem. You can always count on a dog to listen, no matter how silly you might be.

Shado's face is priceless. i can see the intelligence in that precious face. these are great photos. i came to answer your comment on my dirty digger and scrolled to find one of your post i missed in the past.
Baby does not like the cold tile, Jake loves it. when he comes in from our heat wave we are in, after chasing the ball til he can't breathe, he lays on the kitchen tile until he cools down. i give him half a popcicle, the kind in the plastic that come in a box unfrozen. it helps him cool down. Baby digs to china, jake chases a ball and does not dig
